SAFE KIDS Program Carver YMCA So. Florida

Mr. Kirby instructs young students at the George Washington Carver YMCA in South Florida

Mr. Kirby's son Scott (seen right) conducts classes on testing day.

The students have all just passed their tests and are moving on to the next belt on their way to black belt and beyond.

Scott conducts sparring sessions with the young students at Carver YMCA.

Jeffery Wilson ( right as a very young man) is now nearly 6 feet tall and is a second degree black belt. Jeffery and his brother Antwan (now a 3rd degree black belt) were both part of the SAFEKIDS program in the very early 90's.

New white belts get started. Many of these students made it through to black belt. Parents and grand- parents stayed and watched as their children explored the art of Taekwondo.

Many students brought awards they'd earned in
school to pose with Mr. Kirby. A bond forms between instructor and student that promotes
accomplishment and praise for academic achievement. The students are acknowledged in SafeKids class for academic excellence through patches worn on uniforms and metals.

Students from the Carver YMCA SafeKids program compete in a tournament at a local
Policeman's Athletic League  (PAL)

CARVER students win trophies from a local competition held at a karate school in North Miami. We try to make a point of taking the students to other schools to experience different styles of martial arts first hand.
