TAEKWONDO ENTRY IN ATHENS
2004 EXPANDED TO 124
According to the letter of September 21 from IOC Sports Director Gilbert Felli, the IOC Executive Board agreed to increase the athletes quota for
Taekwondo by 24 at its
meeting of September 18-20 in Lausanne. Therefore, Taekwondo competition at the Athens 2004 Olympic
Games shall be comprised
of 124 athletes in 8 weight categories (4 male and 4 female weight
categories).
The IOC will redevelop the invitation process for the Olympic
Games, integrating the Tripartite Commission invitation places, wild cards
and unqualified entries used in previous Games into a central system. Out
of total 124 Taekwondo quota at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the IOC
requested that 4 places should be reserved for invitation places to be
decided by the tripartite commission of IOC-IF-ANOC.
The meeting decided to maintain the total number of approximately 10,500
athletes in approximately 300 events for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and
said it was necessary to strictly control the sport specific quotas in all
sports, and in fact make quota reductions in several sports. Meanwhile,
the WTF had proposed to the IOC to expand the Taekwondo quota at the
Athens 2004 Olympic Games to 192 in respective six weight categories for
male and female divisions.
